Our Laundry Production Facility
We opened up our factory in Haverfordwest in 1958 (See history) and over the years with expansion and increased demand we have invested heavily in modernising our premises and production facility. During the early 80s the old factory was replaced with a much larger building on the same site to cope with increasing demand.
In recent years we have invested over £300,000 in new more modern production equipment. During the winter of 2010 we made our biggest single investment to date in the purchase off a new steam boiler at a cost off over £60,000 replacing the old one which was over 40 years old. When the new boiler was installed we instantly saw the benefits and continued our investments over the coming years.
In 2013 and 2016 we replaced two of our old washing machines with new computerised washer extractors doubling our washing capacity. Reinforced concrete foundations had to be laid for the 4.5 tonne machines with each capable of washing over 200kg of linen per hour. Fitted with new energy efficient inverter drive motors and state of the art controls they are much more efficient and environmentally friendly than our old machines, using less water and electric.
In 2015 we undertook the complex operation to install and replace the entire steam piping network throughout the factory. Engineers spent 2 weeks installing the pipework with minimum disruption to production making the factory much more efficient, with no leaks and improved insulation around the piping.
And during the summer of 2017 we installed our 2nd ironing line, effectively doubling the factories capacity, enabling us to get through nearly twice as much work more efficiently and ensuring our customers have always got clean fresh linen on there beds, even during the very busy summer months.
As our latest addition to our facility, we installed another computerised washer extractor in 2019. This new addition has enabled Thomsons Laundry to process linen at the rate of nearly 1 ton of linen per hour – 12 tonnes per day.
The history of our Laundry
Thomsons Steam Laundry was opened up by Jim Hansen on the site of the former Park house dairy on the Haven Road in Haverfordwest in 1958.
Attracted to the area by the developing oil refineries, the brown and cream vans quickly became a familiar sight around Pembrokeshire.
Hard work enabled the business to flourish, and he was delighted to be joined by his eldest son Allan in 1966.
In the mid 80’s, a new, and much larger factory was built on the site to cope with the increasing business and trade, partly due to increasing tourism in the county. At about the same time, a new and more modern livery to our fleet of van’s, coincided to the name change to Thomsons Pembrokeshire. By now, Jims younger son Mike, had also joined the company, making Thomsons laundry a true family run business.
Expansion into the rental market was inevitable, and with the same attention to quality and service found everywhere within the company, we quickly established ourselves as a market leader within the laundering and linen rental sector in south west wales.
Now into the 3rd generation of the Hansen family, Allan’s son Andrew, is now the operations director, and is charged with taking the company forward into the future. Continued expansion and demand has seen Thomsons laundry venture further afield out of Pembrokeshire and as far north as Aberwystwyth and Borth, and Llandeilo in the east.
“Only the best is good enough” has long been our company motto, and with this in mind, we look forward to providing businesses in South West Wales with the same unbeatable service which has existed for over half a century.”
